How It Works:

The dental implant placement and restoration process

Placement

Once you’ve been approved for treatment, your Littleton dentist will schedule your oral surgery appointment and provide a surgical plan. During the surgery, your doctor will make an incision in your gum tissue to securely place a dental implant in the jaw. Next, the area will be cleaned and sutures will be placed to begin the healing process.

Healing & Osseointegration

Your gums and jawbone will begin to heal once your implant has been placed. After 1-2 weeks, the incision site will be healed, but it will take 3-6 months for the implant to permanently bond with your jaw bone through a process called osseointegration. To ensure you are healing properly, we will see you for a couple of check ups during the osseointegration process.

Applying The Restoration

The final step in the implant treatment process is the restoration. Your restoration, or prosthetic dental crown, will be custom crafted to match your smile and securely affixed to the titanium implant. Once your new tooth is in place, your smile will be complete!

"The people at Zwell Dental are courteous, professional, kind, and friendly. This morning, I (literally) broke one of my front teeth while sleeping. I'd not "registered" myself at Zwell yet, but 2 hours later, my tooth was fixed. This group knows customer service AND good dentistry. Highly recommend."

"Everyone at Cedar Avenue Family Dentistry is phenomenal. Debra's very professional and courteous at the front desk. Maddie is a fantastic assistant. She took me right back and made sure to explain everything to me. Dr. Chittenden took the time to answer all my questions and is a very careful dentist. My visit was quick and pain free! I had a crown placed and I was out the door in 15 minutes. Highly recommend this practice"

C.J. Bigsby

Cedar Avenue Family Dentistry showed empathy, professionalism and concern about what I wanted from them!!! My concerns were their PRIMARY focus and they spent extra time getting to know me! Extra gentle and extra caring. Wonderful staff. Easy everything! Wonderful experience and I will definitely encourage everyone I know to give them a chance because they’ll not disappoint!"

Laura Baumgartner

"Cedar Avenue Family Dentistry is Amazing. When looking at the business name, many people see Dentistry. However, after you have been seen and cared for, another word starts to show...the word FAMILY. The staff is compassionate and loving and will take care of you. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get an implant in one day?

In some cases, you may be able to get an implant in just one day, depending on the type of implant you will be receiving. In these cases, the restoration your doctor provides will be a temporary appliance to keep your tooth healthy and functional until you have fully healed from your dental implant placement surgery. With your temporary restoration, you’ll be able to speak and eat normally during the healing process.Your doctor will schedule a series of follow-up appointments to track your healing process and take impressions of your teeth. These impressions will help the lab create your custom-made restoration. Your permanent restoration will be durable and more natural-looking than your temporaries. We recommend coming in for a consultation to see what type of dental implant might work best for you.

Do dental implants stop bone loss?

Yes. After losing a tooth, your jaw will no longer be stimulated by the natural pressure of chewing and biting. This causes bone loss to occur and also weakens the jaw bone. When the dental implant post is placed, it will bond directly into the jaw bone and act as an artificial tooth root. This titanium “tooth root” transmits the force of chewing and biting through the dental crown and into your jaw bone just like a real tooth would, keeping it healthy and strong.

Can my dental implant become infected?

Yes, dental implants can become infected, but this is an unusual complication. This type of infection is known as “peri-implantitis,” and can sometimes occur during the healing process or if the implant is not kept clean. We'll provide you with all the instructions you'll need to ensure a successful recovery! We encourage you to brush and floss regularly after your implant has healed to avoid peri-implantitis and maintain a healthy implant.

How long will my dental implant last?

When placed properly and maintained with care, dental implants can last for years. In fact, It’s quite common for patients to keep their implants for the rest of their lives. The implant restoration, however, may not last as long. Restorations such as dental crowns or overdentures take on regular wear and tear from chewing, biting, and more. After time, the restoration may need to be replaced to keep your smile healthy and functional. By coming in for regular exams, your dentist can check to ensure your restoration is in good condition.

What are All-on-4® implants?

All-on-4® implants are great for patients who are looking to replace an entire arch of teeth. By using just 4 implants, your entire upper or lower set of teeth can be replaced in as little as one appointment. All-on-4® is more permanent and natural-looking than dentures, and usually costs less than replacing each tooth individually.

What is a single tooth implant?

Single tooth implants are the most-frequently used dental implant and are made up of two main parts. The first is the dental implant, which is a titanium rod with a screw-like shape. The second part is the dental crown, or restoration, which will be attached to the titanium rod. This dental crown reinstates the shape, function, and appearance of your natural tooth. Unlike a partial denture, single-tooth implants are extremely durable and never move or shift.

Have Questions About Invisalign?

If you have minor or moderate orthodontic issues, you are likely a good candidate for treatment with Invisalign. So long as your mouth is free of any oral health issues like gum disease or tooth decay, you will probably be eligible to proceed with treatment. However, Invisalign is not for everyone. Severe orthodontic issues may not be able to be addressed with Invisalign. In these cases, we usually recommend treatment with traditional metal or ceramic braces as they can provide more powerful results. To find out about your options for orthodontic treatment, schedule your consultation today!

While Invisalign trays look very similar to night guards and mouthguards, we do not recommend that you use Invisalign as a nightguard. The clear plastic trays are designed to gently shift your teeth, not protect them. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend that you get a night guard to protect your teeth and go with traditional braces instead of Invisalign. If you wear your aligners at night and notice that they are becoming cracked or worn down, this may be a sign that you are grinding your teeth at night. This will affect your treatment so be sure to let your doctor know right away if you think you might be grinding your teeth.

The cost of treatment with Invisalign is usually comparable to the cost of traditional braces. Every case is different, though, so it’s important to discuss your budget with your doctor. During your consultation, your doctor will consider multiple factors including your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget before helping you decide which treatment to proceed with.

Invisalign aligners are nearly impossible to see when wearing them. This is because they are made out of clear plastic and are perfectly fit to your smile. Your trays will be custom-made trimmed to fit to your gum line for a more seamless look. Plus there are no metal brackets or wires, so you can feel confident in your smile throughout treatment. However, if you eat or drink with your aligners in, they could become stained, making them more visible.

These clear aligners are designed onto a mold of your teeth. A lab technician will apply layers of a photo-sensitive liquid resin to this custom mold. Next, the technician will expose this resin to a laser, curing it into a hard, yet flexible, thermoplastic. This plastic is called SmartTrack®, and it was created exclusively for Invisalign treatment. It’s FDA-approved and contains no BPA, BPS, latex, or gluten.
